Experimental Bamboo Joinery, Lashing and Weaving

My work often involves experimenting with different bamboo connection and joinery techniques. My prevailing interest is what bamboo can do, so I often I embark on simple material investigations: cutting, carving, breaking, bending, splitting, weaving, compressing. dowelling, and assembling.

Sometimes this involves extending ideas derived from other pieces, at others it involves listening to what the bamboo itself can do. I pay close attention to mistakes and breakages – they often point the way to interesting future directions.

Experimenting like this allows me ‘time off’ from exectuting a particular idea or direction. I am regularly reminded that it really pays off to just play around and see what happens.
