‘Tatooine’ Bamboo Couch
I call this my ‘Tatooine’ sofa ‘cos it’s the kind of sofa I imagine Luke Skywalker sitting in.
I started the design with inspiration from a Ulster-woman Linda Garland who lived in Bali and was a pioneer in black bamboo furniture. Very few images remain of her work, but her pieces are so beautiful I thought I’d give it a shot.
So: mine is made from Indonesian Java Black bamboo and Chinese blonde Moso, plus split bamboo boards. Joinery uses fish-mouth joints, bamboo dowelling (Asda bamboo skewers), 6mm steel bolts and Japanese square lashing for strength and rhythm. Finished with yacht varnish to really kick the shine.
