About Will Cottrell
Will Cottrell is an innovative street artist known for infusing his works with spiritual and psychological themes. His art is a contemporary exploration of the timeless question: how do we understand our place in the world?
Will’s creations draw inspiration from ancient gods, psychological archetypes, religious icons, alchemical symbols, and tribal masks, reimagining them in a digital context. “I try to bring these old ideas – veneration of ancestors, spirits, gods, the dead, our internal processes – back to the present,” he explains.
As a street artist, Will transforms urban spaces by introducing unexpected elements, such as an Aztec god in a derelict area, challenging conventional expectations of graffiti or advertising. His pieces often include public offerings, with incense or food at their base, and some of his works in the Thai jungle have become familiar to local wildlife.
Influenced by artists like Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, and František Kupka, Will employs advanced Photoshop mapping techniques to create intricate patterns and vibrant color palettes. He sculpts and carves his forms into these digital bases, also adding hand-finished touches with varnishes, paints, and salvaged technology.
Will’s business acumen also shapes his artistic journey. As Chairman of Brighton Energy Coop, a £5m energy cooperative in Brighton, UK, and having founded three previous businesses, he began experimenting with street art in 2021, declaring, “I find the street is just the best gallery.”
Will lives aboard his boat, the ‘Phosphorescence,’ continuing to blend his creative and entrepreneurial pursuits.
